Tea and Health News
- The health benefits of tea appear to be largely related to the polyphenol content of the leaves. Polyphenols are substances that protect plants from harm.
- Tea provides about 22% of the total intake of polyphenols in the U.S. diet, almost as much as fruits (28%) and vegetables (26%).
- Green and black tea have the highest concentration of polyphenols at 965 mg/cup and 840 mg/cup, respectively. The next highest concentration is in red wine at 434 mg/cup.
- Brewing your tea 5 minutes will extract about 80% of the polyphenols from the leaves.
