Tea Facts and Quotations
  • Tea is drunk to forget the din of the world. - T'ien Yiheng
  • You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me. - C.S. Lewis
  • My experience...convinced me that tea was better than brandy, and during the last six months in Afica I took no brandy, even when sick taking tea instead. Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) Letter, 1912
  • In tea lingo, "tip" refers to the unopened bud of the plant, a highly desirable component of fine teas due to the more subtle and delicate nature of the flavor brewed from this part of the plant. Tips are often easy to see because they tend to be either golden or silver colored. A "tippy" tea often commands a higher price. For examples of how this looks, check out our Earl Grey White Tip, Assam Mangalam, and Imperial Silver Needles.

Tea and Health

Tea and Alzheimer's Disease: In a study using mice that had been medically treated to mimic the symptoms of Alzeimers' Disease, researchers found that chronic ingestion of green tea polyphenols significantly reversed several effects caused by the medication. They concluded that tea polyphenols "might be useful in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease." Biosci Biotechnol Biochem, Sept. 1, 2004; 68(9).

Tea aroma calms the brain: Researchers examined the fragrant chemicals in oolong tea and their effect on GABA receptors, which have an inhibitory effect on the central nervous system. Inhalation of the compounds significantly increased the sleeping time of mice. Researchers concluded that the compounds are absorbed by the brain and create a tranquilizing effect. Biosci Biotechnol Biochem, September 1, 2004; 68(9): 1842-8.
