Tea Facts and Quotations
  • "Bakey" refers to tea that was over-fired and, therefore, too much moisture was driven off.
  • Caffeine-free fruit teas make great popsicles or slushies for the kids! Just make a concentrated batch of tea, maybe Casablanca or Lemon Mango, (a touch of sugar might be desireable) then either freeze in popsicle molds or put in a blender with lots of ice. Nutritious and inexpensive!
  • "One evening, when I was yet in my nurse's arms, I wanted to touch the tea urn, which was boiling merrily... My nurse would have taken me away from the urn, but my mother said 'Let him touch it.' So I touched it -- and that was my first lesson in the meaning of liberty." -- John Ruskin, British author (1819-1900)

Tea and Health News

Drinking green tea when you're having a high-fat meal can lessen the rise in blood fats (triglycerides) after eating. There is evidence that increased blood fats after meals makes a substantial contribution to the incidence of heart disease. This study used male test subjects with a history of mild or borderline high triglycerides and fed them either low (10 mg.), moderate (224 mg.), or high (674 mg.) amounts of green tea catechins along with a light meal that contained 20 grams of butter. (1 cup of green tea contains roughly 300 mg of catechins - source: USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory.) Plasma lipids (fats) were measured before and several times during and after the meals. Moderate and high doses of tea catechins significantly reduced the rise in triglycerides after the meal. Br J Nutr, April 1, 2005.
