  • The delicately crooked little finger that is so often associated with tea drinking was a fashionable gesture in the 18th century for English ladies. Today in China it is sometimes used as a very rude gesture meaning "go away" or words to that effect.

  • Green tea catechins can improve periodontal disease. A recent study in Journal of Periodontal Research reports that application of green tea catechins to gum tissues with advanced periodontitis significantly reduced three bacteria that cause periodontal disease and significantly improved gum condition after eight weeks. The researchers say, "Continuous application of green tea catechin on a daily basis may be a useful and practical method for the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease." They plan further study to determine a product and delivery system for the tea catechins. (Drinking tea, rather than applying it, was not studied.)
  • A recent issue of Consumer Reports says, "Although no one knows the amount of antioxidants needed for a therapeutic effect, our analysis revealed that one 8-ounce cup of green tea can have as much potency as a cup of blueberries, one of the best sources of antioxidants. Black tea can have similar amounts."
